The difference between vision and medical insurance can often be confusing. Below is a quick breakdown of the two:
Vision insurance
- Is designed to cover routine eye care services, such as periodic eye examinations and refractive services (i.e. how doctors determine your prescription).
- Often offers benefits on materials such as allowance toward glasses and contact lenses (including contact lens fittings and follow-ups).
- Benefits may also take the form of covered and non-covered (i.e. out-of-pocket) items.
- Plans vary greatly and pre-approval is sometimes required.
- Without exception, coverage is often limited in scope and frequency of benefits.
- Requires that we collect all out-of-pocket expenses at the time of your services.

Medical insurance
- Is designed to cover medical eye care services such as the evaluation and management of eye emergencies and diseases.
- Often covers (or contributes towards) diagnostic tests, such as digital imaging, visual field evaluations and other specialized tests.
- Never covers routine eye examinations or refractive services.
- Most insurance types have deductibles and co-pays associated with your coverage.
- Requires that we collect these fees at time of your services.
- Does not cover materials unless you have a Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Arrangement (FSA).
- New plans under the Affordable Care Act are also required to offer children’s vision services.
